Renewal of permission for DMC sought

Published on:

The Medical Education Department of Uttarakhand has sent the application  to the Medical Council of India (MCI) for the renewal of permission for the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC). At present the college, started this year,  has permission for  the current year only.

The GDMC was awarded the letter of Permission (lOP) on June 8 based on which the college would admit 150 students in its first batch of MBBS course this year. The Medical Education Director, Dr Ashutosh Sayana, confirmed that the request for ‘First Renewal of Permission’ has been sent to the MCI. He said that an MCI team would inspect the college and the associated hospital and based on its report the permission would be granted. It is learnt that the GDMC has attached a list mentioning the facilities it has along with the request for renewal of permission. Based on its report the MCI would send a letter suggesting modifications, changes and additions if required. The team of MCI is expected to visit the college and associated hospital in the month of September. By the time of this visit the college would have a strength of 150 MBBS students for the current year.

The college was provided with the lOP from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India,  on the condition that the college would continuously upgrade its facilities and invite the MCI team for renewal of permission for the next four years.  The college would have to continuously upgrade the facilities in the associated hospital and medical college for these renewals.  For example, the GDMC would have to upgrade the 300-bed associated hospital to a 750-bed one.

The pending MCI visit also means that the State Government has to take urgent action on its decision to construct a multi-speciality associated hospital near the college in Patel Nagar.

The college at present is banking on the Doon hospital and the Doon women's hospital to fulfil the compulsion of an associated hospital for the Medcial College.

The State Health Minister, Surendra Singh Negi, had recently declared that the associated hospital would be developed on a piece of 150 bighas of land adjacent to the academic and administrative block of the medical college.
