Remote sensing can play an important role in facilitate development in agriculture, said the GB Pant Univeristy of Agriculture and Technology (GBPUAT) registrar Dr JP Pande at the inauguration of a 15-day national workshop on the application of remote sensing and GIS in agriculture.
Addressing the gathering, Pande said that considering the geographical and climatic diversity in India, remote sensing is very important for facilitating the desired level of development in agriculture. “The trainees from across the nation will benefit from attending the workshop in the university while climate scientists will make valuable suggestions for facilitating agriculture development,” he said.
Uttarakhand Space Application Centre director Dr MM Kimothi said that remote sensing had played a vital role in many development works during the last four decades. This technology was used in India for research, discovery and development which has simplified study and mapping in agriculture, forestry and other sectors.
The GBPUAT presiding officer (Agriculture) Dr J Kumar stressed that remote sensing can help increase food grain production in small land areas, which is required to meet the demand of the rising population. The technology can also be used for preventing the indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources, he added. The director (Research) Dr JP Singh said that there is need for new research and innovation for development in agriculture to meet the needs of the growing population.
The fortnight long national workshop is being attended by 15 participants from various States apart from about 100 scientists, students and research scholars.
