Relief for cops as posting term fears allayed

Published on:

With Uttarakhand Government dissolving two of the police ranges recently, speculation that police department was working on a proposal to decrease police personnel’s term of posting in ranges from 16 years to eight years were laid to rest. The annulled decision came as a great relief for the cops, including constables, head constables and SIs, who were concerned ever since buzz started.

As per present rule, a constable can be posted in a range consecutively for 16 years, a head constable for 12 years and a sub inspector for five years. Buzz was that Uttarakhand police headquarters started process to reduce term of posting of police personnel, including constable, head constables and sub inspectors, in a range. Buzz was that the head quarter will reduce range posting term from 16 year to eight years for constables, 12 years to six years for the head constables and from five years to 3 years for sub inspectors.

Senior police officials accepted that a discussion over the topic was held at the head quarter recently. A police officer, however, clarified that it was a discussion only.  As the talks became an open secret, it added to the concern of the police personnel posted in the districts like Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar and Dehradun as they don’t want to move to tough terrains.

In the meantime, the Government on June 1 dissolved two ranges, including Pauri and Pithoragarh, reinstating the old system of two ranges-Garhwal and Kumaon.  In April 2012, the government made four ranges, including Dehradun, Pauri in Garhwal region and Nainital, Pithoragarh in Kumaon region.

When asked whether the department was preparing any such proposal, Inspector general of police (head quarter) JC Pandey said, “A discussion was held recently when there were four ranges. But now the old system is in place, the issue has automatically gone to the bag. At present, there is no such proposal.”

He, however, clarified the department began pondering over reducing term of posting of the constables, head constables and SIs in the ranges as those posted in districts, including Dehradun, Nainital, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar were not interested to go on posting in hilly areas when there were four ranges. It was causing lot of problem in coordination.

With old system of two ranges being reinstated, the buzz has gone into the airs. So, the two range system has come as a boon for many
