Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, along with the Rishikesh MlA Premchandra Aggarwal, visited Mayakund ashram  in Rishikesh on Saturday to pay homage to Shankaracharya Swami Madhavashram, the third contender for the position of Shankaracharya of Jyotishpeeth Badrikashram who died at PGI in Chandigarh on Friday. The 75-year-old seer was unwell for a long time. His body was brought to his ashram at Mayakund in Rishikesh on Saturday morning and later he was  given a Jalsamadhi in the Ganga in line with the ashram’s tradition on the same day.

Rawat said that the life of Jagatguru Shankaracharya Majaraj was dedicated to Indian Sanatana tradition. “He guided the people inhabiting the country. The people would hold the seer in grateful remembrance for ever as he guided them when the nation passed through crisis,” he said.

He further  mentioned his role in the realm of education, saying that he embodied the path of truth. “Though he has left his physical sheath he would continue to be a beacon of light for one and all. The hoary spiritual tradition the land has begot keeps thriving for ages because of such seers,” CM said.

As per the Hindu tradition, the  saints are given Jalasamadhi instead of being cremated.
