Securing proper treatment for three brothers suffering from the genetic disorder- laurence Moon Biedl syndrome has become a major challenge for their mother. On Monday, the mother- Savitri Nayal along with the doctor from Garampani community health centre Dr Vishwaratna brought the three ailing brothers to the BD Pandey government hospital in Nainital.
According to sources, those suffering from this genetic condition experience problems including obesity, mental retardation, hearing loss, cataract and other issues.
Savitri who has been getting her three sons treated for the past couple of years now, said that their eye sight deteriorates during the evening. Along with her sons 18 year old Balwant Singh Nayal, 16 year old Gaurav Singh Nayal and 13 year old Kapil Singh Nayal, she has been going to various hospitals to get their eyesight and weight problem treated. She said that her husband is employed at a hotel in Mumbai. They have incurred expense amounting to more than `1.50 lakh in the treatment of their sons so far. For the past two years, the trio is being treated by the doctor at the community health centre. Now, Dr PD Gupta at the BD Pandey hospital will handle the treatment of their eyes. Savitri said that when her eldest son was about 12 years old, he had undergone a heart-related operation in Delhi. She also took the three to hospitals in Dehradun and Haldwani for treatment but could not secure proper treatment for her sons due to the limited financial means of the family. She had also requested public representatives for assistance more than once but had received no response or assistance. Dr PD Gupta said that this syndrome is a rare genetic ailment in which a person suffering from it experiences various health problems including obesity. He said that symptoms of heart ailment had also been observed in the boys. The treatment of such a health disorder can be administered in a higher centre. For conducting necessary tests alone, the family will have to shell out ` 6K per month per patient. Considering the poor financial status of the family, social workers should come forward to help them.
