On the occasion of Dhanteras and Dhanwantri Diwas, students of Patanjali Ayurved College performed Sasyeshthi Yajna on Friday.
Speaking on the importance of Dhanteras, yoga guru Baba Ramdev said, “Dhanteras is celebrated on Tryodhashi (13th day as per Hindu lunar calendar) of Kartik month.
A reference comes in Skand Purana that that Vaidya of Devtas (heavenly physician) Dhanwantri emerged with Kalash (pitcher) containing nectar after churning of the ocean. There was a fight between angels and demons for this nectar of immortality.”
It is considered auspicious to buy a new utensil or jewellery item on this day. A tradition of doing ‘Yam deep dan’ (lighting lamp for lord Yama) is also prevalent on this day, added Ramdev.
On the occasion, The Pioneer spoke to one of the eminent Ayurvedic practitioners of the city Dr Subhash Naik on commonly found herbs useful in checking Dengue which is afflicting the city.
Recipient of Dhanwantri Sewa Samman -2016 from Maharashtra- based social organisation for his contribution to Ayurveda and treatment of neurotic disorders, Dr Subhash said, “Daru Haldi, Giloy and Shalpharni (a component of Dashmool) are known to be effective for Dengue fever.
Hundreds of patients are getting benefits with these simple herbal concoctions and one may use these at home to keep such viral diseases at bay.”
Fever occurs only when there is disturbance in ‘Vata’, ‘Pitta’ or ‘Kapha’ and balancing these with diet rich in nutrients like vitamins and minerals helps regain health, added Naik.
