Eunuch social worker Rajni Rawat has rejoined the Congress and hoped that her support will ensure Congress wins to all five seats of the State.She rejoined the party in the presence of CM Harish Rawat, State Congress chief Yashpal Arya and its candidate from Tehri Parliamentary constituency Saket Bahuguna among others.
Welcoming her Harish Rawat said Rajni Rawat had converted human disability into an asset and social work done by her had set an example for others to follow. She has her own support base and her return to the Congress will benefit the party. Rajni claimed she had promised that she would help the Congress win all five parliamentary seats in the 2009 general elections and the party had won all seats. “Now I have returned to the Congress and am confident that it will win all the five seats,” she added. Saket Bahuguna thanked CM Harish Rawat for getting Rajni Rawat back into the Congress. “She had extended her support to my father Vijay Bahuguna in the 2009 lok Sabha elections and he was elected from the constituency. This time she is supporting me and I am confident of winning,” he added.
It will be recalled that miffed at not being fielded on the Congress ticket in the mayoral elections in Dehradun last year, Rajni Rawat had left the Congress to contest the mayoral election on the BSP ticket. She had lost the mayoral election but had not rejoined the Congress. Though her return to the Congress is being welcomed by party leaders who expect to gain supporters as a result of this development, it remains to be seen whether this will actually convert into increased votes for the Congress candidates.
