'Rains, snowfall possible at higher reaches'

Uttarakhand Meteorological Centre has forecast light rainfall at isolated places of plain districts and light to moderate rain with snowfall at higher reaches of Uttarakhand between May 21 and 25 due to western disturbances.

Rains might cause inconvenience to those undertaking the Char Dham Yatra in case the rain affects traffic on the mountain roads. The level of mercury has remained high in the State for some days now. Rain and snowfall at high reaches after May 21 in the State may bring the temperature down by a few degrees, said Uttarakhand Meteorological Centre director Anand Sharma on Monday.

Following continued rise in the mercury level during the last few days, city roads saw thinner traffic than usual as many people avoided moving outdoors in the scorching heat. However, people may get relief from heat due to rainfall forecast in the coming days.

Sharma further said that there will be no change in weather on May 20. But there is possibility of light rainfall on May 21 at higher reaches including Uttarkashi and other places in the State. No alert has been issued for May 21 on Char Dham Yatra routes and the weather conditions on this route are being monitored by the Met office, he added.

The Met office has forecast light rainfall at isolated places of plain districts and light to moderate rain with snowfall at higher reaches of the state for 48 hours from May 23. It may lower the temperature by 4 to 5 degrees Celsius from the normal in the state. He further said that the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 35 degree C and 19.6 degree C respectively in Dehradun on Monday. The weather forecast for Dehradun on Tuesday is mainly clear sky with the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to be around 36 degree C and 20 degree C respectively. The weather forecast for Uttarakhand on Tuesday mainly dry weather, he added.
