Rains affect hydro power projects in State

Published on:

The frequent incessant rains in the higher parts of the State are proving adverse condition on the power generation in the State run hydro power projects in the State.

Although supply agency has concurred with the private electricity players to procure electricity but the situation may turn worsen in the near future when the Himalayan rivers and its tributaries started freezing from the next month onwards.

The electricity generation has started looking bleak with the inclement weather in the higher parts of the State. The latest data compiled by the department on power generation through State run hydro power projects clearly highlighted that the power generation hovers around 13 million units which is nearly half of the demand of electricity in the State.

The department ha been procuring electricity from the private electricity generators and withdrawing electricity from the Central Pool in order to meet with the demand of electricity in the State. Well established sources revealed that the power generation in Kalagarh (3X66 MW) hydro power project is reported to be disrupted due to the technical snags.

The electricity geneatoin was also reported to be badly affected in Maneri Bhalli I and II , Chibro nd Khodri hydro power projects due to very less current in the Himalayan rivers and its tributaries. However, Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam limited officials claimed that the turbines have been run on the optimum force in order to generate maximum electricity to meet with the demand of electricity in the State.

It is also equally important to mention here is that the tall claims made by the State power department that no part of the State would be under the power outage has turned fake as several areas continues to face the power cut due the gap in the demand and supply of electricity in the State.

As per the roster prepared by the Uttarakhand Power Corporation limited, 3.30 hours of compulsory power cut has been followed in the rural areas of Udham Singh Nagar district (Kumaon) and Haridwar (Garhwal) district of Uttarakhand. Besides, the small towns of both the divisions of the State continue to face the power outage for nearly two hours in a day.

Additionally, due to the maintenance works carried out by PTCUl on 400 KV Kashipur-Moradabad line ahead of winter, nearly two hours of power cut was implemented in Kashipur, Bajpur, Jaspur and adjoining areas of district. The power cut was also followed in Roorkee and Bhagwanpur for nearly 45 minutes due to the tripping of 220 KV Nara Mator transmission lines and the power supply was resumed after rectifying the errors.

One of the department sources who wished anonymity told The Pioneer that private companies have concurred with the department for selling electricity to Uttarakhand during its lean time in order to meet with the growing demand of electricity in the State.
