Rain likely, but not enough to cool the heat

A day after thunderstorm accompanied by rain lashed Dehradun uprooting trees , blowing away roofs and disrupting electricity supply,  the hot climate returned on Saturday as the mercury shot up to near37 degree Celsius in the city. The weather department said that though it might rain in some parts of the State on Sunday the climate is unlikely to get cool before June 25 when the monsoon is expected to arrive in the State.

As per the weather report sent by the Met office in Dehradun, light to moderate rain is likely in some districts of the State like Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Dehradun, Rudraprayag, Nainital, Champawat and Pithoragarh on Sunday. However, it would rain particularly in the hills, the weather report said. The rain might be accompanied by thunderstorm in some areas, the report added.

Weather forecast for Dehradun for Sunday is that the sky would be clear to partly cloudy with the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to hover around 37 degree and 24 degree Celsius respectively. On Saturday, the maximum temperature soared up to 36.9 degree, three notches above the normal, while the minimum settled at 23.5, normal. In Pantnagar in Udham Singh Nagar district, the mercury shot up to 39.3 degree, four notches above normal. Even high-altitude Mukteswar recorded a temperature of around 28 degree Celsius, four notches above normal, on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the residents of Dehradun grappled with a hot day on Saturday. Humidity level being high compounded the summer woes of the people. A resident said they were eagerly waiting for the monsoon to set in to end the searing heat they have been reeling under. “However, we would have to wait for some more days for the rain to come.  This year, things are very trying as the summer heat persists,” he added.
