The long-continuing dry climate with soaring mercury has ended on Friday as thundershower along with a high-speed storm swept over Dehradun in the evening, uprooting many trees and grounding electricity cables, resulting in road blocks and snapping of electricity across the city and also the district. Subsequently, the temperature dipped by several notches, bringing a long-awaited end of the heat spell the people reeled under for days.
The Met department had earlier warned that hail/ squall with a max speed of 80 km per hour was likely to lash a large swathe of Uttarakhand, involving both the Garhwal and Kumaon regions, on Friday.
As per the forecast, the wet climate with possibility of hail/squall is likely to continue on Saturday too. In Dehradun, the sky is likely to be overcast for most part of Saturday with the likelihood of rain/thunderstorm lashing some places in the district. On Friday, the maximum temperature settled at 36.1 degree Celsius in the city. The mercury dipped though following the evening rain/storm.
A resident of Dalanwala in the city said that the storm felled some trees and some walls crumbled following the high-speed storm that lashed the city.
“The power snapped once the storm started. We wonder whether it would be restored by night. However, the climate has turned a bit cooler after the long-spell of scorching heat with rain remaining elusive for days,” said the resident.
