Public Works Department, Uttarkashi junior engineer (contractual) TS Rana, resident of Purola, Uttarkashi who was arrested on the charge of accepting bribe of Rs 50, 000 was sent to Suddhowala jail after being presented in the court on Thursday. The engineer had sought bribe for clearing the pending bills of ongoing construction projects from a government registered contractor in Uttarkashi.
In his written complaint, he had stated that he had spent Rs 70 lakh for the completion of government projects. He had approached engineer Rana on January 4 for the clearance of the pending bills. But Rana had allegedly demanded Rs one lakh as bribe to clear the bill. He had again met the engineer on March 4, but he had allegedly stuck to his demand of bribe. However, through persuasion, the amount demanded was halved, as per the complaint. Accordingly, Rana had called him at his office with Rs 50, 000 on March 8.
The complainant had fixed the deal, though he, at the same time, had informed the vigilance department about the same.
Vigilance inspector had verified the complaint, which was found correct. Subsequently, Rana was caught red-handed while receiving bribe of Rs 50, 000 from Saini.
The vigilance team had conducted raids at the houses of the accused located in Dehradun, Vikasnagar, Purola, Mori and Uttarkashi.
