Pvt schools defy education department's holiday order

Many private schools of the city defied the education department’s specific orders to observe a holiday on the occasion of martyrdom day of ninth Sikh Guru Teg Bahadur on Monday.

The State Government had officially declared a holiday on the occasion and the education department sensing that many private schools would not observe holiday had issued an order asking all the Government, aided and private schools to observe a holiday on the occasion.

The order however fell flat on its face as many schools preferred to open their schools on the day.

Many prominent schools like DAV public school Defence Colony, Shri Guru Ram Rai (SGRR) School, Hillgrange prep school and Jaswant Modern School were open in the day.

Many private schools in Rishikesh were also open on the day. Many schools however observed the holiday as per the orders but failed to intimate the students and their wards about it in advance.

This resulted in the students returning home in the morning as they learnt about the holiday on reaching school.

When contacted, the Chief Education Officer (CEO) of Dehradun S P Khali told The Pioneer that the department would issue show cause notices to the school which remained open despite the orders.
