Purva Dhanasree leaves audience spellbound

Purva Dhanasree is one of the young dancers of this generation, a Sangeet Natak Akademi Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar awardee of 2008. She has internalised the rare art form in a superb manner and the students of Doon are really blessed to see this art form being performed to them by Purva. This Vilasini Natyam represents the glorious Devadasi tradition of Andhra Pradesh. Devadasis according to Purva were harbingers of knowledge who were able to elevate themselves on a metaphysical plane by their meticulous sewa to the presiding deities of the temples through their dance and music.

Her repertoires included salutations to the rhythm, musical notations and of course the Guardian Hindu deity Ganesha for a soulful performance in the form of shlokhas followed by the melukolu which was performed in the temples as the part of waking up the deity at the dawn. Purva performed Choornika as the next repertoire which described how a devadasi chose flowers from the garden of life to offer them to her lord. An abhinaya depicting the competition between Gansesha and Kartikeya stole the hearts of the students.

Another item describing the elements of nature and obeisance to the Ashta Dik Palakas was thoroughly assimilated by the students as her musicians recited the English version of the Shlokhas. The final piece was in adoration to lord Krishna through a Bhajan Bruhi Mukundeti. She reached out to the young women through her very special portion from the Bhairavi Varnam Daani Sati explaining the sublime inner beauty of Nayika as well as her physical attributes. She was supported by her excellent set of musicians namely S Vasudevan on Natuvangam, Venkateshwaran on the vocals, Sreedharachary on the Mridangam and Rajat Prasanna on the flute.
