'Punish real offenders for polythene use'

Published on:

The district administration should not penalise the traders unnecessarily if they are found with just one or two polythene bags in their shop, but should punish the real offenders concealing huge stocks of the banned polythene in their store, Vipin Nagaliya, president of Doon Udyog Vyapar Mandal said on Monday.

Mr Nagaliya said this emphasizing on the drive to be conducted by the administration for enforcing the ban on polythene bags from Wednesday onwards in the State capital.

According to Nagaliya the traders are already aware of the polythene ban in the State capital and most of them are also observing it strictly.

Instead of selling their goods or products in the polythene bags, the traders are using biodegradable bags available in the market, he stressed.

When asked about the traders' participation in this checking drive, he said, “We won’t be able to participate in the door-to-door campaign but would surely assist by providing an assurance to the administration that the ban will be observed by the traders”.

Regarding the role of Municipal Corporation of Dehradun in the drive, senior city health officer, Dr RK Singh said, “We would be extending all possible support in the drive against polythene bags. A team consisting of various nodal officers including the ADM and officers of various other department has already been formed to make the checking drive a success. MCD officials had already made all preparations and would be providing the required number of vehicles to the administration for the drive," he said.

Singh also informed that DM had announced to penalise violators of the polythene ban and those pasting posters on public property.

It should be noted that the District Magistrate BVRC Purushottam on Sunday held a meeting with officials to plan the drive.

Purushottam has also asked officials of the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA), schools' administration and Vyapar Mandal to participate actively in the anti-polythene drive.
