Detailed research by scientists across the world has established that in order to save planet Earth, it is vital for people to retain their culture. Uttarakhand State Council of Science and Technology (UCOST) director general Rajendra Dobhal said this at a programme held to mark the occasion of Earth Day in Dehradun.

He said, “Around the world, after long research the scientists have reached the conclusion that protecting our culture is the most vital aspect for protecting the earth. The resources available on this planted are limited and hence should be exploited in a controlled manner so that future generations are not bereft of these.” Stressing on the the need for adopting the concept of sustainable development, the UCOST director general said that the natural heritage of the earth needs to be saved.

Former senior scientist at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, AK Dubey spoke of the life-giving aspects of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand from where many rivers originate. He also spoke in detail about the geological composition of the Himalaya and seismic activity in this region.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, former vice chancellor of Garhwal Central University, AN Purohit said that along with the increase in human population, the population of other types of creatures, flora and fauna has also increased. He stressed that humans will have to change their habits and bring about an improvement in their temperament in order to achieve the desired state.

The academician further stressed on the importance of growing ones own food, working towards becoming paperless, desisting from the use of bottled water, capitalising on the   potential in solar power and adopting the practice of cycling.

Purohit further suggested experimentation with the utilisation of solar energy along with construction of small and practical residential units with minimum use of agriculture land for this purpose. The resources of the earth should not suffer from unnecessary load for which the right ratio needs to be achieved between development and increase.
