In a breakthrough, Dehradun police have arrested Haryana- based property dealer Jasveer Singh, aged 39, from ISBT, Patelnagar on Friday who allegedly murdered his wife Jasvindar Kaur, aged 35, and daughter Simran, aged 16, in a hotel room under Govindghat police station in Chamoli district on May 29. The family was on its way back from the pilgrimage to Hemkund Sahib. The double murder committed in a hotel had sent shock waves across the state, leaving the police on their toes to nab the accused who was on the run.
As per preliminary investigation conducted by the police, the accused had hacked to death his wife and daughter.
Subsequently, a case under section 302 of IPC had been registered against Jasveer Singh in Govindghat police station on May 29. Chamoli police had formed several teams to crack the case aside from sharing the accused’s photograph on the social networking sites, including What’s App.
SSP Nivedita Kukreti said on Friday soon after the accused was arrested that Patelnagar police had arrested him as he was found waiting at ISBT for a bus to Ambala. “Suspicion roused, police brought him at ISBT police post for questioning. Initially, he denied, but when police grilled him hard he revealed that he was Jasveer Singh, native of Ambala city, Haryana,” she said.
Earlier, the photograph of the accused had been shared among the police personnel of all the police stations of the district, she said, adding that the police station officers had been directed to conduct stringent checking drives on roads and hotels in their jurisdictional limits.
“In course of interrogation, Singh admitted to having murdered the duo as he was frustrated over the financial crisis he was going through. As per his confession, he along with his wife and daughter had reached Govindghat in their car on their way back from the shrine. While staying in a hotel in Govindgath, he had stabbed his wife and daughter to death. Thereafter, he had left his car at Karnprayag, broken his mobile into pieces and thrown it in the Ganga. Since then he had been wandering about from place to place to evade arrest, being aware of the police on the lookout for him. He had gone to Haridwar, laksar, Delhi and Nasik and returned to Delhi. He had reached Dehradun on Thursday and was found waiting at ISBT to catch a bus for Ambala on Friday,” she said.
She further said that a team comprising ISBT police post in-charge Ravindra Shah, senior sub-inspector Bipin Bahuguna, sub-inspector Yogesh Pandey, sub-inspector Ravindra Shah, constables Nitin Saini, Sampal and Sudhir and Govindraghat police station officer Pradeep Rathor had arrested the accused.
