An investigation is underway after five mobile phones were recovered from inmates in the barracks of the district jail here on Wednesday. Inmate Vikrant Malik, who was recently transferred from Dehradun jail, had three mobile phones with him while two were found with other inmates.
It all began after a phone call demanding Rs 20 lakh was made to a travel agent in Kankhal. After the travel agent lodged a police complaint, investigations revealed that the call had been made from the district jail from a number issued in the name of an inmate’s wife. The Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police, Senthil Avoodai, wrote a letter to inspector general, Prisons, PVK Prasad regarding this. The IG then ordered a check of all the barracks in the district jail after which five mobile phones were found.
Prasad said that an investigation has been ordered. CCTV footage and other aspects will be used to ascertain facts.
