Around 90 inmates of Haridwar district jail staged a hunger strike on Monday, demanding those having completed 14 years’ imprisonment be released immediately. Inspector general, jail, PVK Prasad said that talks were on with the inmates.

Speaking of the matter, Satish Kumar Sukhija, superintendent of jail, Haridwar, said that 450 inmates who had been sentenced to life imprisonment by the court have been still languishing in jail long after  their jail terms are over.

Shukhija further said that he had talked with the protesters personally and subsequently, 10 of them had called off their strike.

“However, 80 of them are still on hunger strike regarding the same demand at the jail campus,” he said, adding that the inmates’ demands have been communicated to the senior jail officers.
