Power dept bears brunt of calamities, incurs losses

The State Power department also faced the brunt of the natural calamities that struck entire Uttarakhand, last weekend.

Despite the fact the several poles were washed away in the incessant rain, the department managed to maintain disrupted-free electricity to its consumers. Well established sources revealed that the department had incurred the loss of nearly Rs 30 crore and the figure may increase when the department evaluates the exact loss in the near future.

Although the department officials claimed that the power supply was resorted to most of the areas in the capital city, the situation is worst in the mountainous parts of the State. Shockingly, the department took nearly two days to replace the electricity pole on New Cantt Road that was damaged in the inclement weather.

Sources revealed that 33 KV Rudraprayag-Ukhimaht line was damaged whereas 33 KV Kedarnath feeder was damaged near Guptakashi in the inclement weather. The power supply was also reported to be disrupted at Rudraprayag city as tri-pole was washed away but officials claimed that the power supply was resorted. The power supply was also reported to be disrupted at Badkot-Purola-Bhattwadi-Moori line as 33 KV sub-station was damaged.

The power supply was disrupted as four electricity poles were washed away at Joshiyada. However, officials claimed that the power supply was resumed nearly after 10 hours to main town and the remote areas in the district faced the brunt of power outage for nearly 12-16 hours. The situation was worst as the control room at Thayud was flooded with rain water.

One of the department sources who wished anonymity told The Pioneer that engineers were already told to repair the lines, feeders and transformers for ensuring the round-the-clock power to the consumers.  “Department has been trying every efforts for removing the technical snags at the lines for ensuring the disrupted free power to the consumers,” he said.
