Since the power generation has stopped in two hydro power projects in the State, the gap between demand and supply of electricity has once again started widening in the Garhwal and Kumaon divisions of the State.
Unable to cope up with the demand for electricity in the State, Uttarakhand Power Corporation limited (UPCl) has started increasing the duration of scheduled power cuts in the State. The power generation has come to stop at Maneri Bhali-II and Kalagarh hydro power projects in the State, thus increasing the gap between the demand and supply of electricity in the State.
Unable to cope up with the increasing demand of electricity in the state which is hovering around 31 million units of electricity per day, the state power department is strictly implementing load shedding with all those villagers who are living in the remote areas of the state among the worst sufferers. As per the roster prepared by the UPCl, two and half hours of power cut was followed till 4 pm in the rural areas of Haridwar district and rural areas of Udham Singh Nagar district faced the brunt of power cut for nearly two hours on Tuesday.
Sources confirmed that other parts of the State also faced the brunt of power cut as the department was trying to bridge the gap between the demand and supply of electricity in the State. One of the department sources who wished anonymity told The Pioneer that the department has been procuring electricity on the regular intervals in order to bridge the gap between the demand and supply of electricity in the State.
“Department will get six million units of electricity through tenders and private company has already concurred with the department for selling 2.2 million units of electricity on Wednesday. Apart from opening sub centres for submitting electricity bills till the month ends, the department has been working round the clock for removing technical snags for ensuring disruption free electricity to the consumers, sources said.
