Posting 100 policemen on deputation to jails hangs fire

The process of sending 100 police personnel on deputation to the jails for a year as announced repeatedly by the Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat still hangs fire. Alarmed over the acute staff crunch that the jails across the State have been facing and the recent incidents of the inmates escaping, giving the jail guards slips, the CM said several times that sending cops on deputation to the jails at least for a year is an imperative.

However, things are yet to make headway principally because of the bureaucratic dithering and red-tapism. State DGP BS Sidhu had recently said that regarding this issue, he had sent a fresh proposal to the State administration. A jail official said that shortage of jail officials, including jail superintendent, jailor, deputy jailors, head warders, warders and female warders, has been leaving an adverse impact on the functioning of the jail administration in the State.
