Post poll defeats, State BJP in stock-taking modePost poll defeats, State BJP in stock-taking mode

Finding it tough to recover from the party's two consecutive defeats in the recently concluded assembly bypolls and panchayat elections, the State BJP now opens its future political battle on two fronts.

On the one hand, it has set up committees to find out what went wrong at the organisational level in these Assembly bypolls and panchayat polls; and on the other, it has accused  the Congress-led State Government of misusing power in the recently concluded Assembly bypolls and panchayat elections. The State BJP president, Tirath Singh Rawat, during his Kumaon visit here on Wednesday informed that the party has set up a panel to assess the reasons that were behind party's defeat in the panchayat elections.

The fact-finding panel will examine the reasons that upset the party's winning prospects in the recently concluded panchayatpolls in all the districts from August 16 to August 21. Thereafter, according to the report of this panel whoever is found responsible whether it is MP, MlA, any senior member of the party or worker, the party will take necessary disciplinary action accordingly.

He also informed that the party has also appointed senior party leader Bachi Singh Rawat to examine the reasons that were behind party's defeat in the Dharchula assembly constituency, while Bishan Singh Chufal will find out what led to the party's defeat in Someshwar assembly segment."Similarly, former State president of the BJP Puran Chand Sharma, will go to the Doiwala assembly constituency to find out what went wrong against the party in that assembly segment in the recently concluded assembly bypoll," added the State BJP  president.

At the same time, State BJP president Rawat came down heavily on the present Congress-led State Government for misusing the power in the bypolls and the  panchayat elections."The matter of concern is that Government officials like Secretary, DM and SP worked as Congress workers in these panchayat elections," alleged Rawat.Post poll debacle, the State BJP leadership may have reasons to have party's perspective on the outcome of the assembly bypolls and the panchayat elections.

But the fact is that among the three assembly seats i.e. the Someshwar (reserved seat), Dharchula and Doiwala, BJP's win in the Someshwar assembly segment was certain before the bypolls. However, the BJP upset its winning prospects in this seat when it denied party ticket to the then party's senior member Rekha Arya. When the BJP turned down her request, then Rekha Arya joined the Congress party and won the Someshwar assembly seat which was earlier with the BJP.

It is matter of opinion whether the ruling party managed to make the most of the pro-incumbency factor in the said polls as the State BJP has alleged, complacency and infighting within the state BJP cannot be ruled out behind party's poor show in the said polls.
