Poor road network may deprive tourists of trekking in glaciers

Poor road connectivity coupled with heavy snow, has deprived tourists of trekking in famous Pindari, Kafni and Sunderdunga glaciers in Kumaon's Bageshwar district.

The concern here is primarily the commencement of tourist season combined with poor road network —devastated by rain last year — has delayed trekking in some of the famous spots at least for a month.More so, delay in constructing  new bridges that lead to the trekking routes which were washed away by the fury of Pinder River in Bageshwar during the monsoon season last year, has only hit the adventure tourism this year in Bageshwar.

The adventurous tourists visit Pindari, Kafni and Sunderdunga glacier generally during April every year. But this year, it hasn’t started yet due to poor accessibility, said DK Sharma, divisional manager, Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN), while talking to The Pioneer.Given the present state of road connectivity, it seems like we would be able to open the glaciers for trekking only till from May, he added.

The KMVN runs adventure tourism including trekking of the aforesaid glaciers in different parts of the Kumaon division every year.A large number of tourists domestic and foreign tourists visit the these glaciers in Bageshwar's Kapkot region. But poor road connectivity, heavily covered with snow, has hit the tourism sector pretty hard this season, added the officials.

located between Nanda Kot and Nanda Devi in the Himalayas, the Pindari Glacier  provides a picturesque view of secluded villages, amid the rugged beauty of this Himalayan region. As the glacial terraces in the Pindari is caused by the Pindar River before reaching the local habitation in Kapkot become the centre of attraction for adventure tourists so that Kafni Glacier and the Sunderdunga Glacier treks. While the Kafni Glacier lies to the left of the Pindari Glacier, the Sunderdunga Glacier is located to its right.
