Kotdwar police are yet to trace the miscreants who had shot dead a youth at the crossing of the Padampur Sukhero under the jurisdiction of Kotwali police on Sunday. Police have registered a case of murder against some unknown persons under section 302 of Indian Penal Code.

The Superintendent of Police Ajay Joshi reached Kotdwar after getting the information. He camped at Kotdwar too to ensure the accused are arrested at the earliest.  Police Kotwali inspector Pramod Shah is investigating the murder case.

According to police, two bike-borne miscreants shot the youth at 5.15 pm on Sunday and fled away. Police immediately cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to nab the criminals. However, breakthrough has remained elusive till now. The murdered youth has been identified as Sumit Patwal s/o late Satish Patwal, resident of Manpur, Kotdwar.

Sumit was returning home on his bike after purchasing vegetables when two criminals came on bike and engaged him in a conversation. The miscreants then fired two shots at him — one in head and the other in chest. Sumit fell down. Before the people could do anything, the miscreants fled the scene.

Police took bleeding Sumit Patwal to Joint Hospital Kotdwar where he was declared brought dead by the doctors. Police seized the bike and other materials of the deceased.

They said the motive might be an old enmity. The deceased was a property dealer and it was learnt that he was involved in the illegal mining too. Three different cases had been registered in Police kotwali against Sumit, it is learnt.
