Police under no pressure in sexual case: ADG

Published on:

Facing flak over their alleged inaction on the sexual harassment charge levelled against a senior BJP leader who was later relieved of his post, the additional director general ( ADG)  of police Ashok Kumar said on Monday that the police are under no pressure regarding the case.

Buttressing his point, he said that the senior superintendent of police (SSP) Dehradun had ordered an inquiry headed by a woman police officer after she had received a complaint on e mail on November 10.  He said that necessary legal action would be taken by the police on the issue.

The statement of the ADG police has assumed significance in view of the opposition Congress making the matter a plank for the upcoming urban local body polls. The Congress leaders have been vociferous in their demand for the immediate arrest of Sanjay Kumar while casting aspersion over the police’s impartiality on the sensitive case in view of its refusal to register FIR.

The state BJP has been left red-faced following the eruption of the matter and the outrage it had spawned. The woman BJP functionary had alleged that despite the state party brass being informed of the lewd comments made to her by the senior party leader, they had chosen to maintain a stony silence for long. The Mahanagar BJP President Vinay Goyal is also being subjected to severe flak over his purported comment on the women in politics.  To take the sting out of the row,  BJP had removed Sanjay Kumar from the powerful post of the secretary Organisation.

But the controversy shows no sign of dying down with the Congress remaining adamant on his   arrest and inquiry by a sitting High Court judge.
