To curb the menace of reckless driving that is leading to frequent accidents in Haridwar district, resulting in deaths, the police are set to use speedometer guns.
As per the traffic rules, a speed limit was fixed long ago for the vehicles moving on the national highways and the city roads. It varies from 80 to 120 km per hour depending on the highways while the limit was fixed at 40 km per hour for the city roads. However, the limit thus fixed had failed to achieve the desired result with the commuters flouting it with impunity and with the police failing to enforce the limit because of their dearth of equipments to accurately determine the speed of the vehicles. True, the police headquarters had provided the traffic police with an interceptor vehicle to help them to grab the errant commuters. But a single such vehicle was not enough to cover the large areas of the district. Now, the district police headquarters providing them with three speedometer guns, one hope those things would be safer on the roads.
Speaking of the matter, SP traffic Prakash Chand said, “Fast- speeding vehicles would be checked with these guns. If someone tries to flee the address of the vehicle owner would be retrieved from the security number plate of the vehicle and challan slips would be sent to his address. Traffic police, CPU and civil police have been provided with one speedometer gun each. Currently demonstration is being done. Very soon, the people would find police equipped with these speedometer guns moving on the roads.”
Dwelling on the speciality of such guns, traffic inspector Hitesh Kumar said, “The speedometer gun can be handled with hands manually. It can check the speed of the vehicles while being placed on a tripod stand. It can determine the speed of the approaching vehicles from a distance of 400 metres. The cops would have thus enough time at their disposal to put barricades at the spot and penalise the errant drivers.”
