Police to enforce HC's order on helmets for pillion-riders: DGP

State DGP MA Ganapathy said on Friday that Uttarakhand High Court’s order of mandatory wearing of helmets by pillion-riders will be implemented strictly. He further said that there was no room for ambiguity on the matter. “We are bound to execute the High Court’s order,” he said. The district police officers have been directed to implement the court order in their jurisdictional limits. “At the same time, we launch awareness programme to acquaint the people with the High Court’s order,” DGP added.

In Dehradun, the police have launched a drive and they are slapping the violators with challans, particularly on the outskirts of the city where maximum number of road accidents are reported from, said SP Traffic DS Gunjyal. He said that 15 and nine challans have been imposed on the violators on Friday in Clement Town and Nehru Colony police station areas respectively while four have been slapped with the same in Rajpur Road area and nine in Raipur.

He said acting on the direction of senior police officers, they have been following a two-pronged approach like imposing challan on traffic violators and creating awareness about the High Court’s order among the people. An awareness drive was launched at Rispana area on Friday, he informed. “Things are encouraging as the pillion riders are generally seen sporting the helmets,” he added.

However, at some areas, people were found arguing with the police over helmet being made mandatory for the pillion riders. Observers, however, appreciate the move, saying that the court’s direction and police’s execution would help lessen the number of accidents occurring almost daily in the city and its outskirts.
