Police start drive against using high beam

Taking cognisance of the rising number of accidents and the resulting death toll because of road mishaps especially in the night, the Traffic Directorate has issued letters to each district for conducting campaign to raise awareness regarding the use of reflectors and avoiding high beams.

District superintendents of police have also been directed to penalise owners of vehicles found using high beam and damaged headlights.

Director General, Law and Order, Ashok Kumar said, “We are going to start a campaign from June 1 for the prevention of road accidents caused by high beams.

Use of reflectors will also be promoted during the campaign, because it appears that most of the accidents in plain areas during the night happen because of the absence of reflectors. The drivers are not able to spot the vehicles clearly at night which results in collisions.”

Deputy Inspector General (traffic) Kewal Khurana said, “During our survey in Dehradun, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar we found that most of the road accidents in the last 4-6 months were caused by the absence of reflectors and usage of high beams on vehicles. In fact, there are some places where construction work is ongoing but the dividers kept there as warning signs have no reflectors.

For that, districts in-charge have been instructed to get in contact with departments concerned and ensure that these loopholes are resolved before June 1. If not done by then, it should be done within the 15 days of this campaign. SSPs and SPs have been instructed to accord personal attention to this campaign, which will be conduct in the first fifteen days of June.”

He further added, “We are requesting citizens to start using reflectors during the night, replace high beam lights and repair the damaged

headlights of their vehicles before June 1, because after that we will be charging heavy penalties.”
