Facing flak from all fronts for not being able to prevent chronic traffic congestion in the State capital, senior police officers were seen visiting various parts of the city to monitor the traffic regulation on Wednesday.
They were spotted at various crossings, resolving traffic congestions to the immense relief of the commuters who have been suffering from the on the road ordeal for long.
Garhwal Range IG/DIG Sanjay Kumar Gunjyal who had inspected traffic system at various roads, had sounded unhappy with traffic congestion occurring almost daily in the state capital.
He himself inspected things at various crossings and acted hard on Aaraghar police post in-charge Ashok Rathore on Wednesday. Rathore was suspended and was transferred to Rudraprayag as he failed to explain traffic diversion under his jurisdictional area when asked by IG Gunjyal. He was alleged to have failed to improve traffic flow at MKP College crossing.
IG Gunjyal inspected traffic at Doon Hospital Chowk around 1.30 pm and from there went at MKP (PG) College crossing, Race Course, Aaraghar Chowk, Curzon Chowk, Survey Chowk and Rajpur Road. He said role of traffic police in resolving traffic snarls is not satisfactory. Gunjyal gave one day’s time to Dhara Chowki in-charge to improve things.
Warnings have been issued to Dalanwala police station in-charge and Kotwali police station in-charge too. They were threatened with departmental action if they fail to improve things on the roads under their jurisdiction.
Action against circle officers and police station in-charges will be taken if the traffic system does not look up in areas under their jurisdiction, he warned. Policemen at various crossings in the city were on their toes after hearing that IG Gunjyal would inspect the city to see things for himself. SP Traffic PK Rai was also seen at various crossings like Survey Chowk resolving the traffic jams in the city.
Unlike normal days when a solitary policeman is seen at crossings at the best and none to man things at the worst, the administration on Wednesday deputed additional policemen at crossings to resolve the traffic pileups. Policemen who were part of patrolling teams were also seen negotiating traffic jams in the city. “We wonder how long the spirit would sustain, given the bleak track records of the city’s traffic police,” said Rohan, resident of Dalanwala.
