Udham Singh Nagar police arrested a 19- year-old youth on Wednesday on the charge of impregnating a minor a day after the minor allegedly threw her newborn baby from the second floor of a residential building at Pantnagar in Udham Singh Nagar district. The baby, however, had been saved miraculously. Both the mother and her baby have been admitted at a hospital. Dehradun SSP Sadanand Date said that they have recorded the statement of the minor under section 164 of CrPC before the magistrate during which she narrated how she had become pregnant.
Rudrapur circle officer Swatantra Kumar said that based on the complaint, a case under appropriate sections of IPC and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act has been registered against the accused in Pantnagar police station. The accused would be sent to jail after being produced in the court, he added.
Police sources said that a minor from Uttar Pradesh living at her relative’s home at Pantnagar had given birth to a child on Tuesday with the relatives (husband and wife)- working at factories- being unaware of the same.
While the minor mother had thrown her newborn from the second floor the baby had fallen on the garbage dump. Hearing the scream of the baby, the colony guard had rushed. Police had reached after being informed by the colony guard. Baby’s mother had later informed the police that she was having sexual relationship with one living in the same locality. According to police, she had not informed her family members, living in Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh, about her pregnancy.
