In view of the possibility of a spurt in cyber crime category in the wake of the Centre’s stress on the transition to cashless economy, the State police have finally approved the proposal of having zero FIRs lodged regarding cyber crime complaints. From the police stations where such FIRs are lodged the complaints would be promptly transferred to the cyber crime police station for quick action against cyber criminals.
Earlier, cyber crime police station used to provide technical support to police stations concerned for solving registered cyber crime cases, said STF Uttarakhand and cyber crime police station in-charge P Renuka Devi.
A total of 665 complaints related to ATM crimes, facebook crimes, cyber- related fraud, cheating, lottery, insurance, job frauds, web hacking, email hacking, account hacking, mobile lost, threat on what’s app, vulgar messages/photos among others have been reported from the police stations of different districts in the state since January this year. 638 out of 665 cyber crime cases had been solved at the police stations with the cyber crime police station having provided technical support to them, she said.
Renuka further said that cyber crimes, including ATM and Bank fraud cases and other cyber crime cases through various social networking sites are on the rise in the State. “State government has formed the first cyber police station in Dehradun in the state on March 25, 2015 to check such crimes under IT Act 2000 and IT Act 2008 (amended).
Cyber crimes like government website hacking, destroying Government digital documents, cyber pornography (child), cyber fraud (more than seven lakhs), financial loss through organised cyber crimes will be solved either in the police stations concerned or at the cyber crime police station depending on the seriousness of such crimes, she said. “Besides, action would be taken against those found indulging in fanning communal tension through cyber and social media networking sites like face book and what’s app,” she said.
SSP Renuka further said that three inspectors and three sub-inspectors have been deputed at CCPS. “We are now receiving FIRs directly. Cases of CCPS are being put before special court (Judicial Magistrate-II). Besides, we are better equipped now. CCPS has its own Mall Khana (store) to store cases and there is a cell also to keep the accused before he is presented in the court,” she said.
