Police apathy comes to the fore in city

Published on:

When the police top brass is stressing on the law- enforcers showing sensitivity towards the common people on the ground, a police constable showed that such platitudes have failed to melt their hard-heartedness into milk of empathy for the suffering people. In a shocking incident, the constable refused to do anything when some passers-by asked him to rush a person lying unconscious on the roadside near Ballupur Chowk to hospital on Monday. He was shivering and frothing in his mouth.

“The constable on his part asked us flatly to take him to hospital and bear the expenses of his treatment. When we asked him whether he would go along with us to the hospital he again refused. More shockingly, a little earlier when we approached  police for  the first time one of  them said that it was one of the constables who had dragged the person lying right on the road to the roadside,” said Rajan, one of those who called up police to take him to hospital.  “Earlier, we called up 108 for ambulance. But they said no vehicle was available at the moment. We rubbed him palms and sprinkled water on his face repeatedly to bring him back to senses.

But nothing happened. We thought that he was either dead or dying,” he added. “Such non-chalance on the part of the citizens is understandable, but police and ambulance showing such insensitivity is shocking,” another one who witnessed things for around two hours said. However, constantly pestered by the persons who could not have left the scene, leaving the dying to his fate, police finally turned up and took him to hospital by ambulance.  He was stable, police sources later said.  “Things we witnessed today tell a sad tale of police on the ground reducing their seniors’ exhortations to bunkum,” said Rajan.
