Arya Samaj activist Swami Agnivesh said that in its two years in office so far, the BJP-led Central Government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi had failed to perform considering the rise in number of farmer suicides and increase in quantity of beef exported by India.

Addressing the local media persons at Arvind Ashram in Nainital on the sidelines of an Arya Samaj camp, Agnivesh said, “In its election manifesto, the BJP had stated that beef would be banned in the country but contrary to this, the sale of bovine meat has increased by about 16 per cent making India among the nations leading in bovine meat export. Earlier, Brazil was heading the list of bovine meat supplying nations- a spot which has now been taken up by India.”

He further opined that at the time of Modi’s election, the public was hopeful of qualitative improvements replacing the varied disorders affecting the nation but on the contrary there has been a deterioration in the situation.

He said, “During the two years of the present Government at the centre,  about three lakh farmers have committed suicides. The Modi Government relaxed bank loans taken by capitalists amounting to crores of rupees but no such relaxation was made in case of the smaller loans taken by the farmers,” he said.

Agnivesh further informed that representatives of various activist organisations are slated to meet at the Gandhi Peace Foundation in Delhi on July 1 to deliberate on issues including quality education, substance abuse, consumption of meat and liquor, starvation and other burning issues. The chief minister of Bihar,

Nitish Kumar among others is also slated to attend this meeting, he added.
