People have made various suggestions for formation of an economically, scientifically and ethically sound rehabilitation plan for working animals which play a major role in the Chardham Yatra and routine life in Uttarakhand. These
suggestions were presented at the event organised by the PHD Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
PFA has suggested that a monitoring committee be established to look into the welfare and maintenance of working animals in the mountain regions. The committee must be required to keep a tab on the conditions of animals in the various regions where animals are used in exceptionally large numbers, especially in the Char Dham and along the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
Carrying capacity of animals for each of the mountain pilgrimage places needs to be determined by the monitoring committee. Scientifically planned and designed night shelters should be made at designated resting places for mules and other animals along the pilgrimage routes. Veterinary clinics should be established along the routes.
Under no circumstances should any critical wildlife habitat be used for construction of roads and rest houses. Vaccination for influenza, tetanus and rabies must be made compulsory and free of cost first aid along with a strict deworming schedule should be facilitated to prevent outbreaks of diseases, said PFA Uttarakhand member secretary Gauri Maulekhi.
