Recently, a violent altercation which resulted in one death at a restaurant on Rajpur Road has once again exposed the blatant, noisy and disorderly violations of the law in events where noisy and drunk revelers are allowed to party late into the night hours past the permissible time. Citizens opine that despite such blatant disregard for the law, police remain inactive in curbing such violations to the detriment of residents facing various problems due to such noise and disorder during the night hours. They want them to act against such owners.
It should be mentioned here that with a valid permission, sound systems can be used only up to 10 PM after which such noise generation is prohibited by the law. However, it is very common for this law to be regularly flouted at party venues and other sites especially in residential areas.
“I have a heart condition and hypertension. I have trouble sleeping at night despite taking medication because of the loud music played late at night. Celebrations are meant to be a time to enjoy and reconnect with family and friends. Today, drinking liquor and loud music are considered a form of celebration. What is the use of the law if it isn’t followed by the citizensIJ” questioned laxmi Dutt Rai, a senior citizens living in Dalanwala.
Srishti Sethi, a Nehru colony resident said “I have pets at my place and it becomes extremely difficult to manage them because of the loud music. They are traumatised by the loud noise generated at events.” Another local Kiran Gaur said, “There is a lawn used for holding parties at the end of our street. During the marriage season, it becomes unbearable with the loud music playing late in the night. Nobody pays heed to the noise and time limits prescribed by the government. Revelers also raise ruckus on the road.”
A resident of Dharmpur, Prakash Pandey opined, “We live in a society where the needs of all have to be considered. Celebrations and playing music till 10 PM is still acceptable but sometimes it continues till 1 or 2 AM; we have to go to work the next day and with such unbearable volume it is hard to catch sleep.”
Bhumika Pant, a student said, “It’s okay to party on weekends but during week days it’s impossible to concentrate on studies or sleep given the extra loud music that is played at such events. Added to this, bursting of crackers is another disturbing trend followed by revelers.”
