People made aware of the various Government schemes should derive the intended benefit to improve their standard of life. Nainital district judge Kumkum Rani said this while addressing the gathering at a multi-purpose legal services camp organised by the district legal services authority at Reetha Pokhra village in Ramgadh development block of Nainital on Sunday.

Addressing the villagers, the district judge said that the main purpose of the legal awareness camp is to facilitate free of cost and easily accessible justice along with the raising of legal awareness among residents of remote areas to enable them to resolve initial problems themselves.

People made aware of Government schemes can benefit from the same to raise their living standards which will facilitate progress at the individual, social and State level. There are various legal provisions for mitigating gender violence and exploitation but lack of awareness on the same prevents women from deriving the benefit of the same.

She further said that because of lack of information about Government developmental programmes at the ground level, the people are not able to derive the intended benefit of the public welfare schemes. The authority organises such camps in remote rural areas to inform the people about legal and development-related aspects. Addressing the women in the gathering, the district judge exhorted them to actively participate whenever such camps are organised. Various disputes are resolved through the medium of lok Adalat, she added.

Speaking on the occasion, civil judge and DlSA secretary Jyoti Bala said that the main intention of the authority is to ensure that the victim gets justice. Pointing towards the cases of violence against women and their harassment, Bala said that one of the major reasons for this is the lack of education and law-related information among rural women.

She exhorted the women to themselves come forward to defend their rights. In case of harassment, the women should inform the police and the DlSA so that they can be assisted as per the system, added Bala.
