Local residents of Shishambada said that the solid waste management plant in their area is becoming the root cause of a lot of diseases and thus should be shifted from the area. The local people conducted a protest march towards Vidhan Sabha to raise their grievances, but they were stopped at Rispana barricading.
The local residents from the area said that since the establishment of Shishambada solid waste management plant, the people of Shishambada have been facing multiple problems. These include inhaling polluted air and the contamination of the ground water in the area. They also claimed that the present condition there can lead to problems like cancer as well, as the chemicals that are secreted by the SWM plant are highly dangerous.
These toxic chemicals are being indirectly consumed by the local residents living in the area. They threatened that if the operation of this plant will carry on then the people of that area will have no other choice but to migrate from that place.
It is pertinent to mention here that when the Shishambada plant was inaugurated about two years ago, the authorities had claimed that it was the first covered plant of its kind. The officials had also claimed then that this would prevent any odour from affected the nearby areas.
However, this claim was proven to be hollow soon after the operation of the plant was started.
The officials of the state government and the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun are also aware of this but have so far failed to take the necessary steps.
At a time when Dehradun city generates more than 250 metric tonnes of solid municipal waste every day, the problem for those living near the Shishambada solid waste management plant is likely to become worse in the future if the authorities fail to take necessary steps.
