PCOS lecture held to raise awareness among girls

Society for Health Education & women Empowerment Awareness (SHEWA) organised a public awareness lecture for teenager girls and younger women on Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) at Sanjay Orthopaedic, Spine and Maternity centre here on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sujata Sanjay said that hormonal imbalance is the main cause of this condition. Earlier PCOS was found in women above 30 years of age but now it is common even in teenagers. She said that six out of every 10 patients of PCOS are teenagers. This hormonal imbalance is caused by unhealthy lifestyle, unhealthy diet and the lack of exercise.

She said that PCOS is a condition which occurs in the reproductive age and leads to weight gain besides excessive growth of hair on the body, face, breasts, lower part of abdomen and upper parts of limbs. Excessive hormone in the blood is indicative of PCOS. This condition may also lead to diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer in women. She said that 30 per cent of issueless women suffer from PCOS.  Though, its exact cause is not known, but it is believed to be a hereditary and lifestyle disease.

She said that oily food and unhealthy diet like fast food items should not be consumed frequently and in large quantity. Consumption of green vegetables and fruits should be included in the daily diet.   Conservative treatment like weight reduction, ovulation induction and hormonal therapy are the ideal treatments for PCOS. However, if there is no improvement with conservative treatment within stipulated period, then cysts can be removed by laparoscopic surgery.
