Garbage and waste products generated in the district headquarter Pauri are being dumped in the different parts of the town after the Municipal Board president Yashpal Benam stopped the disposal of garbage five days ago.
District Magistrate Chandresh Kumar instructed the Municipal board to stop dumping the city’s garbage near Timli bend in lower Chopra area after the complaints from the locals and former municipal board president Rajendra Prasad Tamta.
Even on Gandhi Jayanti, the municipal board remained apathetic to the deteriorated sanitation level of the town with no effort being taken to clear the mess.
The locals are miffed at the municipal authorities, especially the municipal board president who had declared that the municipality will not dispose the garbage unless the district administration revokes its order prohibiting dumping of garbage at Chopra.
Four months after the formation of the new municipal board, the municipal board president has not yet been able to find a place and establish a system to ensure proper scientific dumping of garbage in Pauri even though he had assured the public after assuming oath of office that the waste disposal problem would be resolved soon.
Earlier, the board had directed waste dumping at the Ransi stadium ground but after local opposition the staff started dumping municipal waste at Timli bend in lower
Chopra. The residents of the area met District Magistrate and complained about it citing health risks from such dumping of waste.
Taking cognisance on the pollution and public inconvenience caused by this, the DM Chandresh Kumar ordered the municipal board to stop the disposal of garbage at Timli bend.
He said that the administration had provided land for scientific disposal of garbage some months ago but this site will not be used for simply dumping garbage without treatment.
Former Municipal Board president and former vice chairman of Uttarakhand Sports Council, JS Negi said that the urban local body is responsible for garbage disposa and maintaining sanitation. Negi questioned the functioning of the municipal board.
The people of Pauri are annoyed at the littering and lack of garbage disposal in the different parts of town which is posing a public health risk. Concerned citizens are considering the option of filing a public interest litigation against the municipal board on this issue.
