Pauri still lacks scientific garbage disposal system

Published on:

The Pauri Municipal Board is yet to establish a site for facilitating scientific disposal of garbage generated in the town. Due to this garbage can be seen strewn around in different localities of the city, deteriorating the level of civic sanitation here.

The newly elected municipal board members have failed to solve the problems faced by the public due to lack of proper garbage disposal.

However, the municipal board chairman Yashpal Benam said that the garbage disposal problem will be solved soon.

Apart from sanitation, the city faces problems resulting from encroachment and stray animals, but the authorities have failed to take effective action yet.

The roadsides in the city market are encroached upon by traders while stray cattle and pigs continue to roam in different parts of the city.

Recently, the municipal staff had lifted 32 stray cattle and sent them to a cow shelter in Haridwar while warning animal owners to desist from leaving their bovines and pigs out in the open to roam freely in the city failing which the animals would be sent to an animal shelter.

However, the warning has failed to have the desired effect as stray cows and pigs continue to roam in the town disrupting traffic and causing public inconvenience.

It should be mentioned here that according to the law, every municipal body is meant to ensure scientific disposal of garbage generated in the area under its purview.

However the Pauri municipal board has failed to do this so far and has not even initiated any steps for facilitating a garbage treatment plant needed for the proper disposal of garbage.

Years ago, the municipal board had purchased land for establishing a trenching ground in Mandakhal but this land costing many lakhs of rupees could not be utilised due to objection raised by the residents of Paubo during the tenure of the previous board.

However, following pressure from the residents of Pauri and the district administration, work was started on construction of a boundary wall around the trenching ground for which many green healthy trees were also axed.

The present municipal board chairman had said two months ago that a scientific garbage disposal system would be established for the city.

However, nothing concrete has been done yet to facilitate this.
