Pauri police launch drive against traffic violators

Published on:

Acting on the instruction given by the newly appointed district magistrate Sushil Kumar, the district police have launched a drive against over loading, reckless and drunk driving and also against the practice of the two-wheeler riders moving sans helmets.

It is learnt that  the police department has collected handsome revenue in the form of penalties slapped on the vehicles caught moving while flouting  the traffic norms  in Srinagar and Kotdwar.

However, Pauri police is still lagging  far behind allegedly due to its apathy.

The three big towns of the district- Srinagar, Pauri and Kotdwar facing traffic congestion daily with the traffic rules being violated with impunity for the past many years, all the measures to ease traffic flow have so far come a cropper, say the residents.

They hold inefficiency of the administration, police and transport department for the daily ordeal they are facing on the roads.

However, to ease things a bit, the DM  had instructed the police, the regional transport officer and the administrative officers concerned to launch a drive individually or jointly to check over- loading, over –speeding and drunk driving soon on assuming charge.

It is learnt that Kotdwar  police have slapped penalties  on 2128 vehicles and collected Rs 2,41,650 for a fortnight  from  May 1.

The police during this fortnight have slapped chalans on four vehicles  for drunk  driving, 20 for over- speeding, 40 for over- loading  and 1991 two- wheelers with the riders moving sans helmets. Srinagar police on its part slapped 708 chalans and collected Rs 188900 during  the drive.

However, in respect to the feats of Kotdwar and Srinagar police, Pauri police could have collected just  Rs 22,300 in the form of chalans imposed on the errant vehicles.

The residents of Pauri town said that the regional transport department is still apathetic in stopping  two- wheelers being taken on the roads with the owners having no license.

Besides, they are failing to curb the taxis found taking more passengers than their permitted capacities.

The retired employees association recently met the district magistrate and stated that due to the reckless riding of the  two- wheelers,  the senior  citizens are feeling insecure on the roads of Pauri town and action should be taken against violators.
