The Pauri district Information department has organised a seminar on 'the impact and import of cartooning and caricature as a medium of expression of opinion' to mark National Press Day at the information office premises on Monday.
Many media persons from both print and electronic media participated. A senior journalist GP Semwal presided over it.
Semwal lamented the fact that journalism has become just a profession while it was a mission before the advent of Independence. "Despite its deepening degradation over the years, Press being the fourth estate of the democratic setup has aura of its own. Now, it is imperative for the journalists to work without fear. Transparency must be maintained all through. The cartooning and caricature having become the medium of expression, the cartoonists must be aware of their responsibility to the societal ethos and the ethics inherent in the work," he said.
Anil Bahuguna dwelt on the journey of journalism and said that the cartooning and caricature, now parts of journalism, is an emerging phenomenon.
Illustrating the cartoons of the legendary RK laxman, Sudhir, another journalist, said the cartoons reflect the goings- on of the society.
Rakesh Raman Sukla said that journalism sans fear and favour is the true journalism. The journalists across the spectrum must work for the welfare of the people without cowering before the power that be, he stressed.
Among others who spoke on the occasion included Press Club president Arvind Moudgil, Brij Mohan Kharkwal, Gurvindra Singh Negi and Kapil.
