Pauri District Magistrate Chandresh Kumar gave instructions for channelising the Alaknanda river to maintain the drainage system along with the construction of security wall to save Srinagar and to execute works on war footing to minimise disaster impact. He said this while chairing a meet of the newly constituted District Disaster Management Authority on Friday.

The meeting was held taking cognisance of the sit-in demonstration in Srinagar by those affected by the disaster on June 16-17-18 last year which caused destruction in Kedar Mohalla, new bus station, Panchpeepal, SSB Academy and other places in Srinagar due to the flood in Alaknanda river. The DM said that the Irrigation department has sent four estimates of Rs 125.93 crore to the Government for construction of flood safety wall in four places and to channelise the Alaknanda river. During his visit to Srinagar in the past, the Chief Minister has already announced the release of Rs 50 crore to enable the irrigation department to start work on flood safety measures. He said that the material quarried during the work of channelising the river and drainage system can be utilised on the construction of flood security works.
