Reacting to municipal board president Yashpal Benam’s allegation about corruption in tenders to repair damage wreaked by recent disaster, the Pauri District Magistrate Chandresh Kumar said that Benam had made the statement in frustration as his efforts to stop construction of the new Collectorate building in the Jail Garden had failed.

Benam had alleged that 10 per cent commission was being charged as bribe for accepting tenders invited by the Public Works Department for various works involving repair of damage caused by the recent disaster. However, the DM clarified that a district level technical committee is monitoring the task to prevent anomalies. Kumar stressed that there is transparency in the tender process for the reconstruction and repair works in disaster affected areas, adding that the allegation made by Benam was baseless. The DM further said that the superintendent engineer of the PWD had already cancelled the tender regarding which Block Pramukh of Jaiharikhal, Ajay Khantawal had alleged anomalies. The new tender will be invited for the cancelled tender shortly, he said.
