Major surgeries in the associated hospital of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) here are stalled due to non-availability of the anaesthesia specialists. The doctors of the hospital are doing only doing minor surgeries which do not require the services of anaesthetist. Interestingly, this situation has been precipitated by temporary shifting of all four anaesthesia specialists of the hospital to the Female wing of the hospital. It is learnt that all the anaesthetists of the female wing (earlier called Doon women hospital) are on leave on one or another reason due to which anaesthetists of the general hospital are shifted there. In the female wing services of anaesthesia specialist is needed round the clock for child births which require surgery (caesarian births). The anaesthetists are deployed in three shifts in the female wing of the associated hospital. However in absence of anaesthetists the major surgeries in the general wing of the hospital are being postponed. On Thursday four major operations were listed in the hospital but only one patient could be operated upon. The associated hospital of the GDMC is the biggest hospital of the state and large number of surgeries by the general surgeons, Orthopedics and ENT specialists are done in the Operation Theatre (OT) of general wing of the hospital.
The Medical Superintendent (MS) of the hospital Dr K K Tamta accepted that surgeries are affected due to shortage of doctors. He said that only minor surgeries are being done.
The associated hospital of the GDMC has requested the medical education department to depute oncologist from the Srinagar medical college hospital for at least three days a week so that Cancer patients are given Chemotherapy. The GDMC had recently appointed one cancer surgeon and he has started doing surgery of the cancer patients but the hospital does not has any specialist of Chemotherapy. Under this therapy, the cancer patients are administered combinations of drugs which kills cancerous tissues.
The Medical Superintendent (MS) of the associated hospital of GDMC said that the hospital has requested that the specialist of Chemotherapy in the Srinagar hospital is sent to the hospital on a rotational basis.
