The drive against overloading of vehicles would start in all the seven districts of Garhwal region on Friday, said the Garhwal Range DIG Pushpak Jyoti on Thursday, adding that stern action would follow once police come across such instances.

Besides, the movements of the criminals who are now out on bail would be tracked.

“This aside, we would go extra miles in making people with criminal background to turn over a new leaf. We would help them in leaving behind the criminal activities and in merging themselves into the mainstream society,” he said. DIG met the senior district police officers   during a crime meeting held at the DIG office in Pauri.

While talking to the media persons, post-meeting,  Jyoti said that although this year has seen a spike in the number of crimes as compared to the figures of last year  in the region the success of police  in cracking such cases is above the national level average.  “For instance, police cracked 78 out of 91 murder cases registered so far this year, the percentage being 86. Similarly,  cases of abduction and robbery tell the same story of police succeeding in cracking most of such cases, arresting the criminals, rescuing those kidnapped and even recovering the stolen money and items,” he said.

He further said that the number of cases related to rioting in the region so far this year is  354 while those registered under Goonda Act is 368 and Gangester act is  47.

Besides, 239 gambling cases have been registered while the number of excise-related cases stands at 2582, he said, adding that NDPS and IT crimes have seen a surge this year. While the number of  NDPS is  641 that of IT crimes is 261, he said, adding that they are being solved promtly.
