Opposition leaders meet State Chief Electoral Officer

Some opposition party leaders alleged that they have come to learn during the campaign known as  Jan Hastakshep that some names of the voters particularly  from the minority community and the Scheduled Castes  are missing from the voters’ list. They met the state chief electoral officer Saujanya and submitted a memorandum to her on Tuesday.

Speaking of the matter,  opposition leaders said that  names of some genuine voters from Uttarakhand  are not figuring  in the voters’ list. “We fear that their names have been struck off the electoral rolls with a motive to rob them of their right to cast vote. They are mostly from the Scheduled Cates and the minority community. It is thus very important that their names are included in the list. Besides,  names of  all the citizens above the age of 18 should be included in the electoral rolls,” said a member.

The members  further said that  representatives of  parties or candidates distribute  liquor among the voters during the time of the campaigning. “It is harmful to democracy.  So it is very important for the election commission to issue notification for a complete prohibition on the day the model code of conduct is enforced,” said another leader.

The leaders further said that the election commission must stop misuse of the government vehicles by the ruling party. “Besides, the commission must ensure transparency during the election process,” said another leader associated with the Jan Hastakshep campaign.
