A vehicle thief, who had sold a stolen car on OlX, an online classifieds marketplace for used goods, and stole the same vehicle for sale again through the portal, has been arrested in the city. The police said the accused was using the online marketplace to lure customers for stolen vehicles. The police swung into action when Premnagar resident Akshay Sharma lodged a complaint of car theft with the Prem Nagar police station.
In his complaint, Sharma said that his Indigo car (registration Number UK 12 B 9599) was stolen on May 17 from his house. He informed the police that he had purchased the vehicle via OlX service. Superintendent of Police (City) Ajay Singh asked the Prem Nagar police station in-charge Ravi Saini to crack the case.
Saini told The Pioneer that on a tip-off the police traced the vehicle in Kotdwar town of Pauri Garhwal district and arrested Karan Shivpuri, a resident of Kalal Ghati in Kotdwar. In the interrogation the culprit accepted his involvement in the crime and told the police that he was residing in Jhajhra area of Dehradun for some days from where he stole the car.
It was revealed that the same person had sold this vehicle to Sharma and was planning to take the vehicle to Delhi where he intended to sell it again via OlX. The police said that the culprit was a habitual offender and 17 cases of vehicle theft had been registered against him in various police stations in Delhi.
