A bus carrying pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh overturned near Alaknanda ghat in Haridwar on early Friday morning, leaving one dead and 14 others injured. While the injured were taken to the district hospital by the local police, the body of the deceased was sent for autopsy. Police said that the accident might have occurred after the driver had lost control over the wheels. The deceased has been identified as Vidyaram, 55, son of Mukut Singh, hailing from Saifai village of UP.

SP city Mamta Vohra said that the pilgrims had come to Haridwar to take holy dip in Ganga from Saifai village of Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh. “The accident occurred around 4 am. The injured were admitted to a hospital. However, their injuries were minor,” she added.

Though police ascribed the accident to the driver losing control over the wheels the commuters say that the precarious condition of the stretch riddled with  gaping mud puddles might have caused the accident.
